Falcons WATCH: Carlos Washington Jr. Scores Preseason TD vs. Bengals
Trailing by a field goal with over four minutes to play in the third quarter of Friday night's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Atlanta Falcons' offense was seeking a big play - and received not one, but two from multiple sources.
It started with backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke finding receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside for a 27-yard gain that was initially ruled a touchdown but was overturned, with the officials giving the Falcons the ball back at the one-yard line.
But Atlanta didn't waste any time getting into the endzone for good, with undrafted rookie running back Carlos Washington Jr. finding paydirt. Younghoe Koo knocked in the extra point, and the Falcons re-gained the lead, 10-6.
The touchdown run pushed Washington Jr. up to four caries for 15 yards; in last week's preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, the former Southeastern Louisiana star had 12 attempts for 27 yards while adding three receptions for 19 yards.
Throughout the summer, Washington Jr. has impressed the rest of Atlanta's offense, including star offensive weapon Cordarrelle Patterson, running backs coach Michael Pitre and head coach Arthur Smith, who's certainly intrigued by what he's seen thus far.
“He’s got a great opportunity," Smith said last week. "He’s impressed us every day. [Washington], D.C. kid, went to Riverdale Baptist [High School], really smart football player. He’s impressed [us] and he’ll have a lot of opportunities in the preseason.”
And now, with the battle for the No. 4 running back spot between he and Godwin Igwebuike starting to near decision time, Washington Jr. is starting to capitalize on that opportunity.
