Aaron Rodgers Injury: Would Falcons Ex Matt Ryan Sign with Jets?
The NFL world is in shock after future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers left his New York Jets debut just four plays in with a torn Achilles tendon. The 40-year-old is now out for the year, and New York needs a new quarterback to pair with former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson.
Could the Jets get another former MVP in the building?
Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is prepping for his first season calling games for CBS instead of on the field, but maybe he isn’t ready to hang his cleats up just yet.
Last month, the 2016 MVP told The Athletic how he’s approaching his first season as a starting analyst rather than starting quarterback.
“I’m staying in shape. I think it is kind of, ‘You know my number. You know where I’m at,’” Ryan said. “If anything were to come up, you know, we’ll see. [CBS] is where my focus is at right now. But we’ll see how the season shakes out.”
Ryan’s fall was sudden, going from throwing nearly 4,000 yards in 2021 with the Falcons to getting his role as a starting quarterback stripped from him in 2022.
Last year Atlanta traded Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts, but the results were a far cry from his glory days when he led the Falcons to the Super Bowl. Ryan started 12 games throwing 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a 42.9 quarterback rating, 36.7 points lower than his peak performance.
While it seems unlikely, Ryan might itch at the idea of leaving the booth and trying to give it one last go with a Jets team that has hopes of contending all year long.
