Falcons Cap Space: How Much Can Atlanta Spend on Roster?

With free agency and NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, here's a look at the financial standing of the Atlanta Falcons.
In this story:

The majority of the heavy lifting that GM Terry Fotenot and coach Arthur Smith will have to do from a personnel sense for the Atlanta Falcons this offseason has been completed with most notable free agents signed and the NFL Draft completed.

So how much cap space do the Falcons currently have? According to Over The Cap, the Falcons have $14 million in available cap space. This is the 12th most in the NFL.

Among teams in the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers ($27.5 million) and the New Orleans Saints ($16.5 million) have more cap space than the Falcons. However, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the least cap space of any NFL team, with just $618,791 available.

Jake Matthews ($28.36 million), Grady Jarrett ($20.63 million), Chris Lindstrom ($13.7 million), Jessie Bates III ($9.5 million) and Kyle Pitts ($8.98 million) are slated to have the highest cap numbers in 2023

Notably, the Falcons aren't spending much on their top offensive pieces, with Cordarrelle Patterson ($5.5 million), Drake London ($4.89 million), Mack Hollins ($2.5 million), Desmond Ridder ($1.22 million) and Tyler Allgeier ($953,472) all carrying manageable cap numbers in 2023.

Also of note: Teams much earmark a locked-in amount for their rookie draft pick pool. Stil, more good news is on the horizon …

Fontenot and the Falcons will have over $50 million in cap space to work with next offseason, Over The Cap estimates. If Ridder -- with the help of Bijan Robinson, Pitts, London and Allgeier -- emerges as a legitimate franchise quarterback in 2023, the Falcons could be an intriguing destination for free agents next offseason.
