Falcons Draft 'Solid Athlete' in Alabama DB Demarcco Hellams

Demarcco Hellams was selected with the No. 224 pick in the NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
In this story:

Atlanta Falcons seventh-round draft pick Demarcco Hellams has played in a lot of big college football games as an Alabama alum, but he hopes that his Crimson Tide career is just the tip of the iceberg.

In order for that to happen, Hellams will have to improve tremendously this summer with the Falcons.

SI Draft Bible calls Hellams a "special teams standout who struggles in deep zones" and believes he "could develop into a nickel."

Hellams is certainly a strong athlete, but that will only get you so far at the next level.

"Hellams is a solid athlete in space," SI Draft Bible writes. "As a safety, he is very inexperienced, not trusting his eyes and failing to make plays. He projects as a special teams contributor who could find himself in a nickel role on an NFL roster. To have an impact on a defensive unit, he has to improve his processing."

The Falcons selecting Hellams with the No. 224 pick is an endorsement that he can make the leap. He'll have the opportunity to learn from the likes of Jessie Bates III and Richie Grant during training camp as he fights for one of the final spots on the 53-man roster coming out of training camp in a few months.
