WATCH: 3 Things to Know about the Seattle Seahawks
The Atlanta Falcons will host the Seattle Seahawks in their last game before the bye week. The Falcons enter Week 8 on a five-game losing streak and could be without quarterback Matt Ryan, who is dealing with an ankle injury.
We don't know yet if he is going to play, but here are three things we know about the Seahawks.
First, Russell Wilson is having an MVP-type season.
Last week aside when he struggled against the Baltimore Ravens, Wilson is experiencing his best NFL season, which is really saying something, and is in the MVP conversation. He might just be the favorite at this point with Patrick Mahomes on the mend.
Wilson leads the league with 15 touchdown passes and is averaging 8.5 yards per attempt, which is the highest of his career. He also has just one interception, but that was a pick-six last week against the Ravens.
The five-time Pro Bowler is on pace for career-bests in passing yards and touchdowns. He also leads the league with three fourth-quarter comebacks. It's scary to think -- if the Falcons don't play better on defense -- what Wilson might be able to do at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against them on Sunday.
Defensively, the Seahawks are good but not great like they have been for most of this decade. Seattle hasn't finished below 13th in scoring defense since 2010, but the Seahawks are 20th in points allowed and 16th in yards yielded through seven weeks.
Their biggest issue is what's plaguing the Falcons -- the pass rush. Despite adding Ziggy Ansah and Jadevon Clowney in the offseason, the Seahawks have 11 sacks this year. Atlanta is last in the NFL with five sacks.
Seattle was without defensive tackle Jarran Reed for the first six games because of a suspension. With him back in the fold, the Seahawks have another pass-rushing threat, but against the Ravens last week, the group produced just one sack. That's good news for the less than 100 percent Ryan or Matt Schaub, who will start in Ryan's place if he can't go.
The last interesting thing to know about the Seahawks is their knack for playing close games this year. Five of their seven contests to open this season were decided by four or fewer points. Seattle enters this week 5-2, but the Seahawks own an average margin of victory of only five.
Meanwhile, the Falcons would love to play a close game. Only two of Atlanta's losses this season have been decided by less than 10 points. During their five-game losing streak, the Falcons own a minus-66 point differential.
