Falcons' Terry Fontenot Reveals Belief in QB Desmond Ridder

Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot's comments give insight into how the team feels about its potential franchise quarterback.

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to compete for an NFC South title this season, but nothing would give their playoff odds a boost like a jump in quarterback play.

Heading into his second season, quarterback Desmond Ridder has earned a chance to be the future of the franchise. A third-round pick in 2022, it’s unclear if his leash will extend past this season. For now, though, he has the trust of general manager Terry Fontenot.

“When you play that position, it’s not always about the physical talent—we know he has the physical talent,” Fontenot said. “It’s between the ears, it’s right here in your chest.”

What Atlanta will spend this season deciding is whether Ridder has the makeup to be a franchise quarterback. How he responds to the adversity of a 17-game season will be held under a microscope.

Last season, Ridder started the Falcons’ final four games. He completed 63% of his passes for 708 yards and two touchdowns, culminating in a 2-2 record. However, that was the tail end of a lost season. These games won’t only count—they’ll matter.

“The season is almost like a rollercoaster,” Fontenot continued. “And you better be prepared for that. You better be able to handle the pressure. You better be able to handle the tough times …

“You have to handle it the right way. We believe in Desmond in those areas.”

Atlanta added rookie running back Bijan Robinson, arguably the most high-profile back in a half-decade, to an already elite rushing attack. With further development from receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts, the pieces will be in place for Ridder to take flight.

Eliminating excuses is vital to the Falcons’ evaluation process. The supporting cast is good. Head coach Arthur Smith’s offense is only getting more familiar. The division is wide open for the taking.

If Ridder possesses the traits Fontenot thinks he does, Atlanta has a fighting chance at hosting a playoff game this winter.
