Falcons Suffer 2 Injuries at Training Camp; Calais Campbell Update

The Atlanta Falcons received mixed injury news during Wednesday's training camp practice.
In this story:

FLOWERY BRANCH -- For the first time this training camp, the Atlanta Falcons had to bring the cart out onto the field at IBM Performance Center.

And then, on the very next play, had to do it again.

The first occurred when second-team right guard Ethan Greenidge went down with a leg injury; he remained on the field for a few minutes before being helped onto the cart, not putting any weight on his leg.

Last year's sixth-round draft pick Justin Shaffer, who spent much of his rookie season on the practice squad, entered the rotation in place of Greenidge.

After the cart left, the Falcons returned to action - but immediately stopped once more when defensive lineman Ikenna Enechukwu fell to the ground and stayed there for around a minute; he rose much sooner than Greenidge but was similarly helped to the cart without putting weight on his left leg.

Enechukwu, an undrafted rookie out of Rice, just returned from knee tendinitis on Tuesday after missing multiple practices.

In other injury news, tight end Feleipe Franks went down hard during punt coverage drills and stood up gingerly, putting a little bit of extra attention on his ankle. He stayed on the sideline with the team.

Falcons coach Arthur Smith had no updates on Greenidge and Enechukwu, instead noting that he's seen guys carted off and return two days later, ultimately holding to reserve judgement until final results are in.

Smith did, however, have positive news on a pair of other missing players - offensive lineman Matt Hennessy and tight end Jonnu Smith.

Hennessy has been out of practice all week after suffering a leg injury on Friday, while Jonnu Smith missed each of the past two days for an undisclosed reason.

Arthur Smith declared that Hennessy remains "day to day" and is on a return-to-play plan, while Jonnu Smith will be out for a couple of days but should return soon, and his absence isn't something they're concerned about.

Elsewhere, injured running back and return specialist Avery Williams was in Flowery Branch, riding a stationary bike and appearing to be in good spirits. Williams tore his ACL during OTAs earlier this summer and will miss the entirety of this season but remains present around the team.

Wrapping up the positive news for the Falcons is the return of defensive lineman Calais Campbell, who was placed on the NFI (Non-Football Injury) list at the start of training camp and hadn't yet been spotted around the facility but arrived shortly after practice ended Wednesday.

Atlanta will be off Thursday before returning to the IBM Performance Center on Friday - with Smith sure to provide a new update on the status of Greenidge, Enechukwu, Campbell and others as the Falcons begin working towards the preseason opener on Aug. 11.
