Cowboys OUT on Bill Belichick; Falcons Hiring Coach's Best Option?
The Dallas Cowboys have made their decision, and much to the egg-on-face chagrin of national media types who connected "America's Team" to Bill Belichick, there is no evidence they even contacted him as on Thursday night they announced their decision to retain incumbent coach Mike McCarthy.
So, here sits Belichick - with records of 31 playoff wins and six Super Bowls, along with 333 overall victories and three Coach of the Year awards over 29 seasons - having interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons.
And only with the Atlanta Falcons.
Now, all Falcons owner Arthur Blank needs to do is get with Bill Belichick - one of the greatest head coaches in the history of the NFL and American sports - one more time ... and close the deal.
Right? Maybe.
We still believe the former coach of the New England Patriots wants his previous leverage. He didn't really get it via Dallas, despite his media cronies trumping up a connection that we do not believe every existed.
Belichick, Cowboys & Eagles: Do Falcons Need ‘Hurry Hire’ Coach?
Will he get it via the Philadelphia Eagles? That remains possible, with coach Nick Sirianni dangling there. And still looming are the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Falcons are so far the only team that Belichick has interviewed with. The Dallas decision narrows his options. But we will continue to suggest that while the Falcons would love to be in charge here ... Belichick is still the one calling the shots, looking for leverage and waiting for what's just right.
