Cowboys Trade for 49ers' Trey Lance; Falcons Interested?

Trey Lance has been traded to the Dallas Cowboys, but did the San Francisco 49ers nearly send him to the Atlanta Falcons?
In this story:

The NFC is shaking up after the San Francisco 49ers traded quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

However, there was reportedly an opportunity for the Atlanta Falcons to make a push for him.

NFL insider Benjamin Allbright is reporting that the Falcons and Baltimore Ravens were finalists in the Lance sweepstakes.

Lance, 23, was the No. 3 overall pick by the 49ers, who traded up for him in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, injuries and inconsistencies in his play led him to finish third in the team's depth chart behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, another former No. 3 overall pick who failed to live up to his potential.

The Falcons calling for Lance shows that Atlanta had interest in changing the quarterback position, but ultimately proved that the team prefers Desmond Ridder over him. Ridder, a second-year pro who was drafted in the third round, is getting an opportunity to start a full season for the Falcons in order for Atlanta to get a clear evaluation on him.

Should the Falcons feel sour about Ridder, they can turn to Taylor Heinicke, who started 24 games for Washington since 2021.

If both don't pan out, expect the Falcons to use a high pick on a quarterback next spring.
