The Atlanta Falcons are watching a potential trade target move on.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears a trading a 2024 second-round pick to the Washington Commanders for defensive end Montez Sweat.

Earlier this week, it was reported by Pro Football Talk that the Falcons had offered the Commanders a third-round pick for Sweat.

"The Falcons have offered a third-round pick for Commanders defensive end Montez Sweat; whether a trade there or elsewhere happens could depend on whether Commanders win or lose today," PFT writes.

It has been speculated that the Atlanta Falcons are "standing pat" at this NFL trade deadline, a take that - given the team's opportunity to win a weak NFC South - doesn't make much sense to us.

Atlanta sits at 4-4 entering Week 8 and currently leads the NFC South over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints

At last year's deadline, Atlanta was 4-4 and also leaders of the division ... and wasn't much of a buyer. General manager Terry Fontenot traded receiver Calvin Ridley to the Jacksonville Jaguars and safety Dean Marlowe to the Buffalo Bills while acquiring cornerback Rashad Fenton from the Kansas City Chiefs.

This year, the Falcons made a small deal already, acquiring defensive lineman Kentavius Street from the Philadelphia Eagles for a late-round pick.

Perhaps the Falcons could still show some aggression before the deadline comes, but the clock is ticking and Atlanta doesn't want to be watching strike three go by as other teams load up for the second half of the season.
