NFL Combine: Falcons Looking to Draft 'Next Myles Garrett'?
The NFL Combine takes place in Indianapolis this week, and Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson has been deemed a player that the Atlanta Falcons should have their eyes on.
“The Falcons must come away from this draft with a difference-maker up front,” Bleacher Report writes. “His bend and overall athletic ability aren't necessarily bad, per se, but he might fall short in that department when compared to other first-rounders.”
On Thursday, Wilson will have a chance to prove his athleticism when the NFL Combine starts recording measurements for defensive linemen.
Wilson had 17 sacks during his time at Texas Tech and is a massive human being, said to be 6-6 and 275 pounds, numbers that official Combine measurements will have to verify. For context, that’s larger than all pro players, such as Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.
Garrett was the first overall pick out of Texas A&M back in 2017, in part due to his ridiculous athleticism while standing at 6-4 and weighing 272 pounds. He ran a 4.64 forty-yard dash, had a 1.63 ten-yard split, had a 41-inch vertical, 10’8 broad jump, and bench pressed 33 reps of 225 pounds, proving himself an athletic anomaly, especially for someone his size.
If Wilson could put up numbers in the range of Garrett’s historically impressive showing, don’t be surprised if the Falcons look to add him to a pass-rushing unit that was subpar at best last season.
In 2022, Atlanta had a mere pressure percentage of just 14.6 on the season and totaled only 21 sacks.
Lacking a true star on the outside of their defensive line, should Wilson dispel the concerns surrounding his athleticism at the combine, the Falcons could draft him with their No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft come April.
