NFL Trade Rumors: Cordarrelle Patterson Leaving Falcons?

The Atlanta Falcons have reason to trade Cordarrelle Patterson this offseason.

The Atlanta Falcons have made a massive transformation since the end of last season. However, there's still plenty of work to do before the team takes the field on Sept. 10 against the Carolina Panthers.

Among the potential question marks on the team lies within the running back room, where Cordarrelle Patterson's future in the team appears up in the air.

Bleacher Report suggested Patterson as the player the Falcons should consider trading ahead of the 2023 season.

"The 32-year-old is entering the final year of his contract, and the Falcons could save $4.3 million in cap space by trading him," Bleacher Report writes. "While the return for Patterson wouldn't be massive, Atlanta should be able to get a pick or player back from a team with less backfield depth."

The Falcons' running back room is in good shape with or without Patterson. The team had Tyler Allgeier, a fifth-round pick in 2022, run for over 1,000 yards last season. Allgeier broke the franchise record for rushing yards by a rookie, a feat that may not last long because the Falcons drafted Bijan Robinson with the No. 8 pick.

Robinson is projected to be one of the top running backs in the league and the Falcons appear to be one of the NFL's most dynamic rushing attacks. That's why Patterson's role within the offense is unclear. Patterson might be the best "third-string" running back in the NFL, which may prompt teams to reach out to the Falcons for a possible trade. The least Atlanta could do in these conversations is listen.
