Giants Clear Additional Salary Cap Space

General manager Joe Schoen performed some salary cap gymnastics to give the club some breathing room in which to operate.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has been busy of late figuring out plans to clear more cap space beyond the $$1,373,753 they currently have per Over the Cap, an amount which is the third-lowest amount of space in the league and a number that doesn't yet reflect any cap savings the team might have gained from extending kicker Graham Gano to a three-year deal on Friday.

According to ESPN, Schoen and the Giants have converted the base salaries of linebacker Bobby Okereke and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to signing bonuses, which will result in an additional $1.55 million in cap space.

Okereke, signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Colts this past off-season, carried a base salary of $1.9 million, while Lawrence, who just signed a new contract this year, had a base of $2.25 million.

Both players will see their respective 2023 base salaries lowered to $1.08 million, the minimum for players with their respective accrued experience.

The additional cap space, including the projected savings on the Gano deal, should give the Giants around $5 million of cap space, plenty to work with to make standard operating moves each week.
