This Week 5 Opponent Would Probably Become the Giants' No. 1 Receiver

The Giants don't have a true No. 1 receiver just yet, but if they could steal Tyreek Hill from the Dolphins, whom they face in Week 5, that might just solve that problem.

As we count down to training camp, the Giants Country editorial team went through the rosters of each of the Giants' 2023 regular-season opponents and selected a player that, if the Giants could acquire for the upcoming season, they absolutely should.

Who did we pick from each team? Stay tuned--and yes, for the NFC East teams, we picked two players since the Giants play them twice.

Tyreek Hill, Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphins

Height: 5-foot-10 | Weight: 191 pounds
College: Garden City CC (2012-2013), Oklahoma State (2014), West Alabama (2015)
NFL Experience: Kansas City Chiefs (2016-2021), Miami Dolphins (2022-present)
Career Stats: 108 games played, 598 receptions, 8,340 receiving yards, 63 receiving touchdowns, 13.9 yards per reception, 68.1% catch percentage.

The New York Giants have done their best to improve wide receiver depth during the offseason. However, they still lack a clear-cut No. 1 option for quarterback Daniel Jones to throw to.

The Giants did find a receiver with No. 1 potential in third-round pick Jalin Hyatt. However, the reigning Fred Biletnikoff Award winner must still be properly developed to reach that potential. As for the team’s other wide receivers, they don’t have an exceptionally high ceiling or pedigree.

If the Giants could hypothetically “steal” a player from any of their 2023 opponents, they should look no further than the Miami Dolphins, who they play in Week 5. The Dolphins not only have a No. 1 receiver but perhaps one of the best in the league in Tyreek Hill.

Where Would He Fit In?

Hill would instantly be the Giants’ top receiver.

In 2022, his first season with the Dolphins, Hill had the best season of his career. Although he had only seven receiving touchdowns, his 119 receptions, 1,710 yards, 77 first downs, 7.0 receptions per game average, and 100.6 yards per game average were all career highs. The receptions and receiving yards totals were second in the league behind only Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson and are among the top 20 single-season totals in league history.

Hill’s biggest contribution to the Dolphins was his impact on the team’s young quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. Despite suffering from several concussion problems during the 2022 season, Tagovailoa put everything together when he was on the field and lived up to the incredible potential he showed as a college prospect. Hill’s arrival immediately coincided with Tagovailoa’s breakthrough, and Miami’s passing attack is now widely regarded as one of the most dangerous and exciting in the NFL.

Extracting Hill from the Dolphins and putting him on the Giants would be a boon to Jones's development. Despite not having a top-tier receiver to throw to, Jones had a breakthrough in the 2022 season by emerging as a dual-threat quarterback. Giving Jones a receiver of Hill’s caliber would allow him to use his still-emerging passing skills to the best of his ability, which, coupled with his outstanding scrambling skills, would make Jones a complete quarterback.

Hill can also assist in the production of receivers around him. A prime example is Jaylen Waddle; after setting an NFL rookie record for receptions in 2021, Waddle improved even further in 2022. Although his reception total was lower, Hill’s presence allowed Waddle to increase his yards per reception average to an incredible 18.1, which led the NFL.

If Hill were to join the Giants, opponents would have to key in on the explosive receiver and focus less on Jones’ regular supporting cast, like Hodgins and Campbell.

Hill was a fifth-round pick by the Chiefs that was carefully developed into a generational talent, and the Giants could similarly nurture Hyatt with Hill around. He transformed the Miami Dolphins from an emerging offensive engine into an electrifying dynamo. If the Giants were to hypothetically extract him, they’d hope for similar results with their emerging offensive pieces.
