What Giants Are Getting in New S&C Coach Aaron Wellman
The New York Giants returned a few years in their selection of a new coach to replace Craig Fitzgerald, the team's strength and conditioning coach who departed for Florida last month.
The Giants new hire is a familiar face: Aaron Wellman, the team's strength and conditioning coach from 2016 to 2019. His one-time assistant on the Giants coaching staff, Pratik Patel, joined the Locked On Giants podcast to remind Giants fans what the team is getting in Wellman, a well-respected strength and conditioning coach who spent the last four seasons at the University of Indiana.
I think he's a major asset, just knowing a lot about health and performance and knowing a lot about the coaches that are in the game at college and professional level. What he brings to the table is very unique.
He's already proved it once with the Giants, although, unfortunately, it was a time when the team was in a rebuilding mode. You do what you can to see if there are areas that need to be improved upon.
Patel was asked what's so unique about Wellman.
He's very detail-oriented. As a coach, regardless of what your job is, you want to be very detail-oriented. We know the most successful ones, they have a plan. They know a lot about a lot. And they want to make sure that everybody understands it, too.
You can't just have generic plans that you've used from other places. You know, there are a lot of coaches that copy and paste things that may have been successful at other places and expect to see the same results.
He's not married and tied to one methodology or what he used to do when he was successful at the college level and just bringing all that to the pros. When you go from college to the NFL, it's a very unique transition. You don't necessarily know what it's like and how to be successful until you get thrown into the mix and get through a first year.
He's also no-nonsense. He knows exactly what he wants, and he communicates that in a very effective way. That's who he is. He doesn't try to fake it. He doesn't try to be somebody else. The players respect that.
