Giants Future: How Many NFL Draft Picks in 2024?

The Giants enjoyed extra draft capital in each of general manager Joe Schoen's first two years running the draft. But that might be changing in 2024, absent any trades.

It's ever too early to start looking ahead to future roster-building years, be it keeping an eye on future salary cap space or, as is the case in this particular article, an eye on the draft capital, which Giants general manager Joe Schoen values so much in building the roster.

If we go back to the week before this year's draft, Schoen mentioned that he wouldn't be afraid to dip into future draft assets to move up, though as we all know by now, he did not have to do that when making his two moves up the board in the first round for cornerback Deonte Banks and receiver Jalin Hyatt in the third round.

That's probably just as well, considering where the GIants currently stand for next year's draft haul. New York is not projected to be in line to receive any comp picks in 2024, having signed more free agents this past off-season than they lost.

As of this writing, the Giants will have their allotted seven original picks, the actual slot of which is still to be determined. But that could change depending on how summer training camp shakes out at certain positions.

The Giants are set to enter summer training camp with an abundance at wide receiver, a group which, if it stays relatively healthy, could allow Schoen to move a receiver to another team for future draft capital.

Then there is always the chance of a surprising development of a player no one saw coming (think a Victor Cruz type of emergence) that allows a trade of a player whom many currently have penciled in to be on the 53-man roster right now.

Or if Schoen wanted to add to his capital, he could do what he did in his first draft as Giants general manager, which is to trade down in rounds to pick up extra assets to use later on in the draft, such as what he did in 2022.

In that draft, Schoen traded back twice in the second round while still landing receiver Wan'Dale Robinson with pick No. 43 and getting three picks in the process, including an extra one in the third round that became Dane Belton and an extra fifth-rounder that turned into linebacker Micah McFadden.

Only time will tell what the future brings, but based on what Schoen has done in two drafts so far with moving around the board, it's hard to imagine him planning to stand pat with just seven picks next year.
