Dallas Turner, EDGE

Height: 6’3”
Weight: 247 lbs.
Class: Junior
School: Alabama
Stats

Dallas Turner was considered an elite EDGE prospect coming out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the 2021 recruiting class. Turner was the 9th-ranked player in the country on the composite rankings, and he was also the #1 EDGE and #2 player in the state of Florida.

Strengths

  • Elite first step off the edge that’s going to get him right past less athletic tackles
  • Length (88th percentile wingspan, 80th percentile arm length) helps him offset his underwhelming height (21st percentile)
  • Has a ghost rush that reminds me of a young Von Miller - bait the tackle to punch and duck right under it
  • Eats up space in a hurry with his explosiveness
  • Is a loose athlete, can bend a ton around the edge
  • Shows a bull-rush, long arm, and swipe in his toolbox
  • Lateral agility helps him on wide-breaking plays
  • Can use his length to get his hands while being engaged with a blocker
  • His ability to work wide and under blockers then come back and work outside-in when they overcommit

Weaknesses

  • Is going to need to put on some weight to be more than just a pass-rush specialist. Shouldn’t be a problem with his frame.
  • If his first move doesn’t work, he doesn’t really know how to go deeper into the toolbox to deconstruct blocks on that rep
  • Needs to be more aggressive against the run, is too content to just engage and occupy blocks instead of shedding
  • Needs to improve his hand usage, too often misses his chop
  • When tackles make good contact with him, he can get overpowered sometimes
  • Speed-to-power needs work to be more consistently effective

Summary

Turner has shown plenty of ability as a pass-rusher this early in his career and it’s clear that’s what he values with his skillset. He needs to put on some weight and gain strength, but none of that should be a problem given his frame.

I am fairly confident that his floor is still that of a productive pass-rush specialist, and his ceiling would have him as reliable all-around with double-digit sack production.
