Notables
Overshown is an explosive fifth-year senior who had an excellent 2022 season for the Longhorns. Overshown recorded 96 tackles, 46 STOPs, 10 for a loss, four sacks, 23 pressures, 2 PBUs, and was a Butkus Award semifinalist for the second year in a row in 2022. Overshown was First Team All-Big-12 in 2022 as well.
He finished his college career with 249 tackles, 30.5 for a loss, 116 STOPs, nine sacks, 50 pressures, three interceptions, 17 PBUs, and three forced fumbles. He’s raw for a linebacker, but his athletic traits allowed him to dabble with EDGE snaps. Overshown attended the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Strengths
- Very good long-rangy athlete with sideline-to-sideline speed
- Elite closing burst, acceleration, and explosiveness - twitchy athlete
- Quick trigger coming downhill - good bend/ability to avoid contact in tackle box when he decides to penetrate or blitz
- All the necessary range in pursuit
- Very aggressive and physical - bone-crushing hits
- Reigns violence on opposing ballcarriers - elite pop on contact
- Very good slanting, exchanging gaps, or looping with excellent control and burst
- Long limbs assist with him closing throwing windows and with his overall tackle radius
- Does well to knocks passes down and break on receivers in front of him
- Effective blitzer who gets skinny and does well to contort his body around slower IOL
- Good penetration skills when moving forward
- Took snaps at EDGE - flashed a nice counter inside spin that resulted in a sack
- Upside through the roof if he develops
Weaknesses
- High-cut long limbs that lack density
- An athlete that plays linebacker
- Inconsistent and marginal as a run defender - relies on athletic gifts
- Raw run defender and key & diagnosing skills
- Pursuit angle consistency can improve
- Could do better seeing through blocks
- Attempts to undercut outside zone blocks - puts himself out of position and removes himself from the play too often
- Use of hands to stack & shed is inconsistent
- Eliminated at the second level by IOL
- Iowa State: Q2, 0:06, 1st & 10
- Kansas State: Q1, 11:45, 2nd & 2
- Baylor: Q2, 4:15, 2nd & 4
- TCU: Q4, 13:33, 1st & 10
- Love his aggression, but wild technique into tackle point leads to missed tackles
- Misses too many tackles in general - had a 19.1% missed tackle rate through college
- Lost in zone coverage - flies around undisciplined - does he have a plan?
- A work in progress with the nuances of the position
Summary
DeMarvion Overshown is an athlete who played the linebacker position at Texas. He’s very raw and new to the position, which is easily perceived through his tape. He possesses tantalizing athletic traits, closing burst, and physicality into contact, but his ability to consistently read blocking schemes and react is problematic. Overshown also struggles to stack & shed and often fails to play controlled disciplined football.
There’s a path where Overshown develops the nuances of playing linebacker and cleans up his tackling mechanics. He’s not a finalized project, and he’ll take time to develop, but the right coaching staff who can develop his game while leveraging what he can do right now may find a gem later in the draft.
