New York Giants Draft Prospect Profile: RB Zach Evans

Let's take a look at a potential Day 3 prospect for the Giants at running back.

Zach Evans, RB

Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 202 lbs.
Class: Junior
School: Ole Miss

Zach Evans was the 16th-ranked overall prospect and second-highest-ranked running back in the 2020 recruiting class from Houston, Texas. Evans initially went to the TCU out of high school, but after two seasons in Fort Worth, Evans transferred to Ole Miss because he was unhappy with his usage with the Horned Frogs.

Strengths

  • Has the home run ability to take any carry to the house
  • Explodes through the line of scrimmage
  • Has solid patience as a carrier
  • Does a good job of bouncing runs to the outside when it’s there
  • Needs heavy contact to be brought down, arm tacklers beware
  • Does a great job of identifying open rushing lanes
  • Sound running routes out of the backfield

Weaknesses

  • Durability has been an issue for Evans throughout his college career
  • Doesn’t consistently hold the ball securely, five fumbles in his college career - three in 2022
  • Not creative as a ball carrier in space
  • Has struggled with drops in his career
  • Pass protection is a consistent struggle for him

Summary

Evans is about as sound a runner as there is in the 2023 NFL Draft. As a boom-or-bust runner, he will be frustrating at times, but with the number of explosive plays he creates -- he’ll be worth it. Taking him early on day three could give the Giants an immediate contributor and a long-term committee back.
