New York Giants Bringing Back Tyre Phillips to Active Roster

New York's offensive line depth continues to be paper-thin as they shuffle around talent to find a solution.

The New York Giants are signing offensive lineman Tyre Phillips off the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Phillips was initially a third-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020. He was released by the Ravens on August 31, 2022, and was signed by the Giants the next day.

The 6-foot-5, 330-pound Phillips, who can play guard and tackle, appeared in 12 games for the Giants last year, with five starts at right tackle. Given his versatility, he was a favorite to land the swing tackle role this summer in training camp, but he was a surprise roster cut on August 29, 2023.

New York initially signed Phillips to the practice squad, but was released the next day. He's been on the Eagles practice squad since in what was one of the biggest head-scratching roster moves this regime made.

The addition of Phillips muddies the waters regarding the chances of Justin Pugh, who currently sits on the Giants practice squad, being signed to the 53-man roster. Pugh was elevated last week to play left guard, but once Ezeudu, filling in at left tackle for Thomas, suffered his injury and was forced from the game in the first quarter, Pugh moved over to left tackle, where he had some struggles.

The Giants are also signing tackle Josh Miles off the Falcons practice squad, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Miles was a seventh-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, spending three seasons with them and appearing in 17 games, mainly as a jumbo tight end and on special teams.

The 6-foot-5, 325-pound Miles, who played his college ball at Morgan State, has twice landed on injured reserve during his stint with the Cardinals, once in 2021 and again at the end of the 2022 preseason.

Miles, who has experience playing left tackle, signed with the Falcons in March of this year but did not make the 53-man roster coming out of camp despite having competed at left tackle. He was instead signed to Atlanta's practice squad.

Pugh has since reverted to the Giants practice squad. If he remains there, the team can elevate him two more times this year if they wish. Pugh is also free to sign with another team's 53-man roster.

The Giants placed Joshua Ezeudu on injured reserve with a toe ailment. Earlier this week, they had waved Jalen Mayfield.
