Former Duke CB Leonard Johnson Signs with Giants

The Giants are now turning their attention to adding more depth in free agency.

The first wave of free agency might be over, but the work for New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen is still going strong.

Schoen and the Giants, who are set to host a visit from Rams free agent defensive lineman A'Shawn Robinson, have reportedly signed cornerback Leonard Johnson to a three-year deal, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

Johnson, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, played his college ball from 2018-2021 at Duke, where he racked up 165 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, six interceptions, and 16 pass breakups. Johnson, who recorded 25 games with at least three tackles for the Blue Devils, missed just one game in his college tenure, appearing in 47 games with 39 starts for a total of 2,961 career snaps.

He missed last season due to an injury suffered while getting ready for the combine.

Here is what NFL Draft Bible had to say about Johnson in its scouting report:

Long-limbed, high-hipped corner with average speed. Johnson is pesky in press coverage with active hands and does not give up at the catch point, making late breakups. He is often late to turn and panics when the ball is in the air in man coverage. Johnson projects as a camp body at cornerback who could have enough intriguing moments to stick on a practice squad. His inconsistency in coverage, poor physicality and inability to tackle will make it tough to make an active roster.

Johnson, if signed, would primarily be a depth signing as the Giants are believed to be planning a dip into what's a deep cornerback class in this year's draft.
