Former New York Giants offensive line coach Bobby Johnson has been hired by new Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn to coach the Commanders offensive line, the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

Johnson, a 14-year NFL coaching veteran, spent the last two seasons with the Giants working under head coach Brian Daboll, with whom he also worked in Buffalo during the 2019-2021 seasons.

Daboll relieved Johnson of his duties the day after the Giants' 2023 season concluded.

Under Johnson's watch, the Giants offensive line struggled. In 2023, it allowed 85 sacks, the second most in league history since sacks became a tracked stat. The unit, besieged by injuries across the board, also finished 30th in pass-blocking efficiency rating with a 78.6 score and was tied for third-most quarterback pressures allowed (245) with the Tennessee Titans.

In 2022, Johnson's first season with the Giants, the Giants offensive line wasn't as banged up as it was in 2023. The unit's pass-blocking efficiency rating was 82.8, tying them for 26th in the league. They also allowed 212 quarterback pressures, the third-most in the NFL.

In 2022, left tackle Andrew Thomas earned his first-ever all-pro honors, landing on the second team.

Johnson was replaced by former Las Vegas Raiders offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo, who was hired on January 11.

With Johnson having landed a new role for the upcoming season, all but one of the Giants assistant coaches not retained by the team either through termination or resignation have landed jobs elsewhere, the exception being defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins, who, along with his brother Drew, the Giants' outside linebackers coach, was fired the day after the Giants' 2023 season ended.
