Giants Interviewing Bears Assistant Carlos Polk for STC Role
The New York Giants will interview current Chicago Bears assistant special teams coach Carlos Polk for their special teams coordinator vacancy, ESPN reports.
Polk is a former NFL linebacker who spent seven seasons with the San Diego Chargers, who drafted him in the fourth round out of Nebraska, and then one season (2008) with the Dallas Cowboys.
He began his coaching career in 2009 with Grossman College as an assistant special teams coach before moving to the NFL in the same role with the Chargers, Bucs, Cowboys, Jaguars, and his most recent team, the Bears.
As part of the Bears staff, Polk worked with special teams coordinator Richard Hightower to develop a special teams unit that was highlighted by their 26.2 kickoff return average for the 2022 season, which led all NFC teams and ranked second overall in the NFL to Indianapolis' 27.8 average.
The Giants were denied in their requests to secure interviews with the special teams coordinators of the Chargers (Ryan Ficken), Panthers (Chris Tabor), and Falcons (Marquice Williams).
They have instead turned to assistant special teams coaches, among them Matt Harper of the 49ers, as hiring an assistant would constitute a promotion for that individual.
