Giants Interview Chiefs Defensive Assistant for Vacant DC Job
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll's search for a new defensive coordinator continues, with a new candidate entering the mix.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Kansas City Chiefs linebackers coach Brendan Daly interviews for the Giant's vacancy that became available following the resignation of Wink Martindale.
Daly's coaching career began at the high school level in 1997 before moving to the college ranks in 1999 when he was hired as the tight ends coach at Villanova. After a one-year stop in 2000 as a graduate assistant at Maryland, he continued to coach tight ends for Oklahoma State and Illinois State before moving to the defensive side of the ball in return to Villanova in 2005, when he coached the defensive line.
Daly moved to the NFL in 2006 with the Minnesota Vikings, where he was the assistant defensive line coach through the 2008 season. He then spent the 2009-2011 seasons with the St. Lois Rams as their defensive line coach before returning to the Vikings in 2012 as their defensive line coach through 2013. He was replaced by Andre Patterson, who is currently the Giant's defensive line coach.
Daly crossed paths with Daboll in 2014 when he was hired as a defensive assistant on former head coach Bill Belichick's staff. Daly remained with the Patriots through 201, working his way up to defensive line coach before leaving for his current stint with the Chiefs.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid initially hired Daly as the run game coordinator/defensive line coach. Daly's assignment changed in 2022 to his current role of linebackers coach.
In 2022, Daly helped develop second-year linebacker Nick Bolton, who called plays for the defense and led the team in tackles with 180, a new single-season franchise record. Under Daly's direction, Bolton recorded nine games with 10+ tackles, the most 10+ tackle games in team history.
Daly was also instrumental in developing rookie linebacker Leo Chenal, who recorded 29 tackles (16 solo), three quarterback hits, and three tackles for loss in 17 games (eight starts).
