Giants, Wink Martindale Parting Now Official

The Giants and Martindale make a clean break after a drama-filled departure by the 60-year-old defensive coordinator.

The nearly three-day-old drama between defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and the New York Giants has ended, as the team has announced that both sides have mutually agreed to part ways.

The fireworks began on Monday when, hours after telling the media that he expected both Martindale and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka would be back in 2024 despite not having met with either man, head coach Brian Daboll met with Martindale to advise him of his planned coaching changes which included the dismissal of outside linebackers coach Kevin Wilkins and his brother, defensive assistant Drew Wilkins, both of whom were hand-picked assistants by Martindale.

That didn't sit well with the 60-year-old coordinator, who reportedly unleashed a verbal, expletive-filled tirade at Daboll before storming out of the meeting room and then the building. Martindale, who indicated he was resigning on the way out, refused to take the Giant's calls over the next two days as he headed to his Florida home.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Giants and Martindale finally agreed that, per ESPN, they would allow Martindale to pursue employment with another team in exchange for his forfeiting the $3 million he was owed in 2024, the final year of his contract.

The Giants, who also need to fill coaching vacancies for their special teams coordinator, offensive line coach, outside linebackers coach, running backs coach, and lead strength and conditioning coordinator, will now begin a search for a new defensive coordinator.
