Giants Work Out Two Receivers/Return Specialists

The Giants reportedly took a look at receivers/return specialists during their weekly player workouts.

The New York Giants held tryouts for prospective players on Tuesday, the usual players' day off.

Those who got workouts were receivers/return specialists Andre Roberts (as reported by the NFL Network) and James Proche (as reported by ESPN).

Roberts, 35 years old, has been with nine teams over his 13-year career, including the Cardinals, Commanders, Lions, Falcons, Jets, Bills (in 2019-2020), Texans, Chargers, and Panthers. He's appeared in 182 games with 41 starts and has caught 262 passes out of 491 targets for 3,079 yards and 15 touchdowns.

As a return specialist, he has 219 career punt returns for 1,880 yards and three touchdowns, and 260 kickoff returns for 6,751 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Roberts was named a first-team All-Pro in 2018 while a member of the Jets and was a Pro Bowler during his two seasons with the Bills.

Proche, 26 years old, is a former sixth-round draft pick by the Ravens in 2020. The 5-foot-11, 193-pounder has appeared in He's caught 25 receptions out of 40 pass targets for 278 yards (11.1 yards per catch average) and no touchdowns.

He's returned 27 punts for 222 yards and two kickoffs for 22 yards over his career.

The Giants currently have rookie Eric Gray handling both kickoff and punt returns. Thus far, Gray has one punt return for seven yards, a return in which he appeared to have more room to run only to fail to make the first man miss.

It's unclear if the Giants plan to upgrade the returner role or if they are simply continuing to assemble players for their short emergency call list in the event of an injury.
