The New York Giants undoubtedly have one of the most underachieving rosters in the National Football League, their 6-11 record resulting in their having the sixth pick in this year's NFL Draft.

A look at New York's needs reveals plenty for general manager Joe Schoen to address, most notably at offensive line, quarterback, cornerback, and receiver.

But the quarterback position is drawing the most discussion these days, largely because a significant part of the fan base doesn't view incumbent Daniel Jones as the long-term answer.

Jones, who in 2022 had a good enough season to earn a new four-year, $160 million contract, regressed last season while also dealing with his second neck injury in the last three years and a torn ACL that ended his season early. But long before he also showed signs of regression, it could be argued that the Giants management had its doubts about the long-term viability of Jones as the team's franchise quarterback based on how his contract was set up.

The Giants have an escape hatch in place after this coming season, Year 2 of the deal, in which they could move on from Jones if he continues to look more like he did earlier in his career than in 2022. And Bob Glauber, a retired columnist from Newsday and current Pro Football Hall of Fame voter, believes that if the Giants want to reach new heights, they must consider moving on from Jones.

"Listen, I think Daniel Jones works his butt off," Glauber told the Locked On Giants podcast. "I commend him for getting the most out of his talent. He got that longer-term contract.

"I'm just not convinced that the ceiling is high enough when you're talking about championships. So I think you've got to be open to looking elsewhere for a quarterback."

While Glauber doesn't think Jones is the best quarterback for the Giants in the long term, he's realistic about the situation the Giants are currently in with the veteran quarterback. Glauber expects the Giants to move forward with Jones for at least another season because the finances warrant them doing so.

"Is it Daniel Jones for another year? Probably," Glauber said. "You know, [Tommy] DeVito was a great story, but I don't know that you look at him as a longer-term option. Then, the other question is, what do you do in the draft? You're not high enough right now for any of those top three quarterbacks, maybe top two or three."

Glauber notes how important it is for General Manager Joe Schoen and Head Coach Brian Daboll, both of whom are entering a pivotal Year 3 of their tenure, to get this decision right. And if that means trading away assets to get the quarterback that will help them break through to the next level, then so be it.

"You can do some things maneuverability-wise to get up there if you feel like you've really got a conviction on one of them," Glauber said. "So I think they're in a lot of limbo, and it's a critical offseason, especially for Joe Schoen in terms of what he does and the direction that he kind of charts for this team."
