With Schmitz, Patrick Banged Up, Bryan Hudson Gets His Shot at Center for the Giants

It’s never a good thing when a starter has to miss time due to an injury, but for the New York Giants, if you have depth you believe in, it does make the situation more tolerable.

Such is the case at the center position. Starter John Michael Schmitz has been sidelined with a head injury suffered last Friday at The Greenbrier.

While his injury is not believed to be one that will keep him out for the long term, his absence, along with the ongoing knee issues that veteran backup Lucas Patrick has been dealing with, has created some questions about the depth at center.

Second-year interior offensive lineman Bryan Hudson, the ACC Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner in 2023, is trying to calm any concerns.

Hudson, who can play any spot along the interior and long snap, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Louisville with the Detroit Lions in 2024.

With Schmitz sidelined and Patrick trying to work out the issues with his knee, Hudson has a golden opportunity to become a part of head coach John Harbaugh’s first Giants team.

The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Hudson, who saw preseason action at center and guard last year for the Giants, allowed three pressures in 62 pass-blocking snaps (99.2 pass-blocking efficiency rating).

In 24 run-blocking snaps, he posted an impressive 90.7 run-blocking grade, the best run-blocking grade on the team.

Also worth noting is that per Pro Football Focus, Hudson actually got better over one year. In 114 snaps during his rookie season with the Lions (all at center), he had an overall grade of 65.6.

Last summer, he finished with a 90.1 overall grade with the Giants after receiving snaps at all three interior positions. His overall grade was the best grade out of all the Giants offensive players.

Hudson Fits the Offense’s Profile

With the Giants looking to be more of a power rushing offense, Hudson’s background fits in with that objective. Hudson is often quick off the snap and precise with his hand placement, which gives him an advantage in run blocking by enabling him to climb to the second level with minimal resistance.

He also has sufficient power in his game to do battle with some of the league’s more athletic defensive linemen, and has held his own against bigger guys like Giants nose tackle D.J. Reader.

What Hudson lacks at the moment is experience, though with Schmitz unlikely to play Saturday when the Giants host the Minnesota Vikings, that will change quickly enough.

Already Hudson, working in place of Schmitz, has drawn the attention of head coach John Harbaugh.

“I think he's done really well,” Harbaugh said. “You know, it's funny because we did feel like we needed to get him in there, even with the twos, and then now with the ones, and he's risen to the occasion so far.”
