2023 NFL Draft: Texas Tech Pass-Rusher Tyree Wilson Visits With Jaguars
Unless the Jacksonville Jaguars want to make a major move up the board in April 27's first round, it is hard to imagine them landing Texas Tech pass-rusher Tyree Wilson. But that won't stop them from doing their due diligence.
According to SI's Albert Breer, Wilson spent Tuesday on a pre-draft visit with the Jaguars, a surprise since he is a potential top-five selection.
It makes sense why the Jaguars would be interested in Wilson as a player. Wilson has drawn some comparisons to Travon Walker from a year ago thanks to his hulking 6-foot-5, 274-pound frame with 35.625-inch arms.
A transfer from Texas A&M, Wilson started for Texas Tech's defense for three years, racking up 15.5 sacks and 29 tackles for loss in the process.
Wilson started all 13 games in 2021 and recorded seven sacks with 13.5 tackles for loss, leading the team in each category. He then exploded onto the scene in 2022, recording seven sacks and 14 tackles for loss in 10 starts, earning First-Team All-American and First-Team All-Big 12 honors.
Jacksonville had one of the highest pressure rates of any defense in 2022 but also registered just 35 sacks, good for the 26th most in the NFL. After losing pass-rusher Arden Key in free agency, it is clear that evaluating this year's pass-rusher class is critical for the Jaguars.
“I think we’ve got to improve our pass rush. I think that’s vital, particularly on third down,” Jaguars head coach Pederson said last week at the NFL's annual owners meetings.
"I thought we were good with the run, we just gotta continue to get better with the run and shore up some things there. I think the passing game is the area we have to look at and address in the offseason, and clean that part of it up."
