Trevor Lawrence on Jaguars’ Preseason Finale: Goal Is ‘To Just Be Clean and Execute’
The Jacksonville Jaguars enter their final preseason exhibition against the Miami Dolphins in what will be a battle for the state of Florida. It will likely be the Jaguars’ best preseason test as Miami’s roster is among the NFL's best, boasting incredible speed on both sides of the ball.
It seems Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the offense is ready to knock off the rust and get to work as it is expected we see more than a quarter from the starters. It will likely be the first time fans will get to truly experience what the 2023 season will have in store for them.
What is the key to Saturday's game? Jaguars’ offensive coordinator Press Taylor and quarterback Lawrence both agree it is to play mistake free ball and to have that feeling of a real game.
“You want to see clear communication, it’s our chance to be at home. You kind of want the butterflies of these guys getting in a game and understanding they’re about to get tackled. So, clean operation from a communication and substitution standpoint, then you want to see them execute,” said Taylor.
In a game against an opponent like the Dolphins, it will be key to truly act as if it is a real game. Miami’s roster is among the NFL’s best and surely the league’s fastest. Their coaching staff, led by head coach Mike McDaniel, has quickly jump-started a previously underperforming group.
Taylor further emphasized that desire for clean execution, “Again, it’s still somewhat of a core gameplan for us. It’s not exotic stuff, so you just want to go out and see clean execution out of these guys while making plays, too.”
It seems that the offense is on the same page as Lawrence uttered similar remarks regarding the offense’s plan in their first game of the season at ‘The Bank’ in 2023.
“Execute the concept we’re running, let’s be sharp, let’s not miss a bunch of throws, not have many drops, any of that stuff. I think when you look at the game, let’s just be polished, let’s move quickly in and out of the huddle, and just execute,” Lawrence said.
He continued, “I think that’s what you’re looking to do. Obviously, no game is going to go perfectly, there’s going to be some things that you got to work around and some obstacles. But I think that’s the main idea, to just be clean and execute.”
The regular season opener against the Indianapolis Colts is quickly approaching, which means the staff, roster, and fans must prepare for another long, exciting season ahead. The Jaguars hope to get healthy and have stated that their health is a priority this week.
The offensive and defensive lines have been hit especially hard but look to be quickly rebounding, aside from Cooper Hodges, who suffered a Patella injury, and DaVon Hamilton, who is out for an extended unknown amount of time with a non-football back injury.
Saturday’s contest will no doubt be more exciting than anything we have seen so far as two playoff teams will clash in what will be the most authentic football we have seen yet.
It will also be the last chance for players on roster bubbles across the league to make a case for themselves to be on their team’s respective 53-man roster. In Jacksonville, there are several ongoing camp battles that could very well be decided by Saturday’s play.
