Trevor Lawrence on Miscommunications With Calvin Ridley vs. Browns: That's Just Stuff That Can’t Happen for Both of Us'
With Christian Kirk out of the lineup vs. the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars got a picture of what the offense might look like without him.
Right now, the picture isn't a pretty one.
The Jaguars turned the ball over four times in a 31-27 loss to the Browns on Sunday, with three of those turnovers coming on Trevor Lawrence interceptions.
All three interceptions came on plays targetting Zay Jones and Calvin Ridley, with Lawrence going 9-of-27 for 82 yards when targetting the duo. That is just barely over three yards per attempt.
The most egregious plays were to Ridley, with a first-half interception in the red-zone coming as Lawrence and Ridley seemed to be on two different pages. It wasn't the first or last time it happened on Sunday.
“Too many miscommunications. We’ve been playing together for a while now. That’s on us, so we have to take some accountability for cleaning that up. That's just stuff that can’t happen for both of us," Lawrence said after the game.
"We have to be on the same page, and it seems like all those plays that we weren’t, some weeks you are able to get away with it and it doesn’t bite you, but this week they all did. Turned into turnovers or sacks or bad plays or whatever. We all have to take accountability, look in the mirror. There’s stuff that I didn’t do well today, and just in general we have to communicate better, we have to be on the same page, we have to play together, and just do the little things. I think we are overlooking some of the details, and I think that’s where some of the stuff has gone wrong.”
Asked if he saw the miscommunication issues from his perspective, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said, “A couple times. And again, without a week of practice together, that affects them a little bit. Obviously, that’s not an excuse and they would say the same thing. They’ve played a lot of football together and all that. We just have to evaluate the tape and figure out a way to get back on track.”
“Obviously, we miss Christian. He was a big part of the offense. But where we are in the season, this late, it’s the next man up mentality, so we’ve got to continue as coaches to prepare our players and get those guys ready to go regardless of who’s in there. So a lot of confidence and we’ll move forward.”
