2023 NFL Free Agency: Fred Taylor, Tyson Campbell Recruit Darius Slay to Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars have stood pat during the first several days of free agency, but that doesn't mean there isn't a little bit of recruiting going on.
Both Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell and former running back Fred Taylor took to social media on Wednesday to advocate for the Jaguars to land now-released Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, whose impending release will be official at 4 p.m.
While the Jaguars, who currently have just a projected $6,437,488 in cap space, would have to do some cap gymnastics to land Slay, pairing him with Campbell and veteran cornerback Darious Williams would give the Jaguars one of the best cornerback groups in the entire NFL.
Slay is a five-time Pro Bowler and former first-team All-Pro, making the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons. Slay started all 20 games for the Eagles in 2022, recording three interceptions and 15 pass deflections.
Slay also has ties to the Jaguars' staff after playing under Doug Pederson in his first year in Philadelphia in 2020, which ended up being Pederson's final season with the Eagles.
"I had him. We brought him to Philadelphia and he is playing extremely well right now, a top defender, corner in this league, getting some turnovers and takeaways," Pederson said during the 2022 season when the Jaguars were preparing to play Slay and the Eagles.
Signing Slay may seem like a potential pipedream for the cap-strapped Jaguars, but they can at least thank people like Campbell and Taylor for their recruitment efforts.
