Jaguars are lone AFC South team to not beat Chiefs after Week 10's results

After the Tennessee Titans knocked off the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, the Jacksonville Jaguars were faced with a stat that may end up haunting the team sooner than later.

The Kansas City Chiefs, featuring one of the NFL's most dangerous quarterbacks in Patrick Mahomes, the 2018 Most Valuable Player, and led by one of the league's top coaches in Andy Reid, have had a little bit of trouble with the AFC South this season. Well, with most of the AFC South.

After the Chiefs lost to the Tennesee Titans 35-32 in Nashville, Kansas City ended their 2019 series against the AFC South with a 1-3 record against the division. The only AFC South team to not beat the Chiefs this season? The Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1.

The Jaguars got beat down 40-26 by the Chiefs during the season opener, and to make matters worse the game was in Jacksonville. Mahomes threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions, and Kansas City racked up 491 yards of total offense.

The Jaguars' offense totaled 426 yards, but most of those came when the came was already out of reach.

How does that compare to how the rest of the AFC South performed vs. Mahomes and the Chiefs? Not great.

  • Week 5: Indianapolis Colts defeated Chiefs 19-13 in Kansas City. Mahomes threw for 321 yards and only one touchdown, and Kansas City had only 324 yards of total offense. Colts totaled 331 yards.
  • Week 6: Houston Texans defeated Chiefs 31-24 in Kansas City. Mahomes threw for 273 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Kansas City had 309 yards. Texans totaled 472 yards.
  • Week 10: Titans defeated Chiefs 35-32 in Nashville. Mahomes threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Kansas City had 530 yards of offense. Titans totaled 371 offensive yards.

So, the Jaguars scored the second-most points of any AFC South team when it came to playing Kansas City, along with totaling the second-most offensive yards. But the Jaguars also allowed the most points and yards to the Chiefs of any AFC South team in 2019.

Mahomes was largely mistake-free against the AFC South, only throwing an interception against the Texans, but the Jaguars' inability to hang with him was a problem only they had. Every other team either limited the Chiefs' ability to score or kept the game close enough throughout four quarters to give themselves the chance to win at the end.

With the Titans win propelling them to 5-5, the Jaguars now sit alone at the bottom of the AFC South. As the team tries to dig itself out of a hole, the inability to defeat Kansas City when the rest of the division was able to get the job done will surely sting.

4-5 Jacksonville is on a bye this week but will play at the Colts next Sunday. The Jaguars can't afford to drop any more division games after already losing to the Texans twice. And as the Chiefs series has shown, Jacksonville can't afford to play worse than the rest of the division against common opponents, either.
