Jaguars Place Dawuane Smoot on PUP List

The veteran defensive lineman will be on the PUP list as he works his way back from his season-ending injury last season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made another roster move ahead of the first practice of training camp, placing newly re-signed defensive lineman Dawuane Smoot on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Smoot tore his Achilles in Week 16 vs. the New York Jets in 2022, an injury that led to him going unsigned in free-agency until the Jaguars re-signed him last week to a one-year, $6.25 million deal with $3.25 million guaranteed.

The PUP list is designed for players who are physically unable to perform football services due to football-related injuries. These players can participate in team activities but are not allowed to practice.

Players on the Active/PUP list count toward a team's 90-man roster. Players can be removed from the list at any time during camp, but can't be placed back on the list. Players on this list as of final roster cutdowns must be placed on the Reserve/PUP, released, traded or counted against the 53-man roster.

A third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Smoot appeared in 90 games for the Jaguars over the past six seasons, recording 22.5 sacks, 27 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles. One of the best developmental stories in recent Jaguars history, Smoot was able to become one of the Jaguars' most reliable pass-rushers in recent seasons as he transitioned to more of an inside/outside role that saw him line up in multiple positions.

At the time of his Achilles injury against the New York Jets in Week 16, Smoot was second on the team in pressures, fourth in quarterback hits, first in sacks, and second in pass-rush win rate. He recorded five sacks in each of the last four seasons, recording 22.5 sacks in that span and often looking like Jacksonville's most consistent pass-rusher.
