Jaguars Teammates Grade Trevor Lawrence's Trash Talk Skills
Trevor Lawrence has long been compared to former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, a fellow former No. 1 overall pick who was given the 'generational prospect' tag out of college.
Turns out, the two may be more similar than previously thought.
Known for his dry comments on the football field, Luck became one of the more entertaining quarterbacks on the microphone, thanking every defender who hit him. For as elite of a quarterback as he was, he was surely no trash-talker.
According to a poll of Lawrence's teammates from CBS Sports, it doesn't look like Lawrence is much different.
"Uhh, not gonna like, it's kinda like terrible," Jaguars running back and former Clemson Tigers teammate Travis Etienne laughed before giving Lawrence an 'F' grade.
"I feel like he just gotta work on it a little bit."
"Trevor's trash talk maybe needs a little work," Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley agreed.Â
In 17 starts in 2022, Lawrence completed 387 of 584 passes for 4,113 yards and 25 TDs. His 387 completions were the most in a single season in franchise history and his five rushing TDs were tied with David Garrard for the most in single-season franchise history.
Lawrence joined Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Bills QB Josh Allen as the only players in the NFL with 25-plus passing TDs and at least five rushing TDs. Against the Titans in Week 14, Lawrence set a career-high with 368 yards passing and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
The second-year quarterback totaled four 300-yard passing games and orchestrated three comebacks of 17-plus points, including a comeback from behind 27-0 in the postseason against the Chargers.Â
Lawrence noted that his trash talk style is sarcastic in nature, something that wide receiver Christian Kirk certainly agreed with.
"He never crosses the line," Kirk laughed. "And it's almost like in a nice way he's talking trash, nobody usually gets mad at him."Â
Lawrence, who did show some emotion on the field last year in bouts vs. the Tennessee Titans and Las Vegas Raiders, explained his way of getting his point across last season after giving Raiders linebacker Denzel Perryman some smack talk.
"I like to have fun. I donât talk too much, just have fun," Lawrence said last year following a defeat of the Raiders.Â
"Youâre probably talking about that one clip with Denzel (LB Denzel Perryman). Heâs awesome. We talked after the game. He was fired up. He wanted to talk to me after he hit me. I just telling him, I got six yards, I donât mind it, it doesnât bother me. Just going back and forth. I think thatâs how the game is meant to be played. You have fun, compete. Weâre all out there competing, so yeah, that was part of it.â
