Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence Has a Message Following Loss to Chiefs

What did the franchise quarterback have to say after one of the worst losses of his career?

Week 2 was far from ideal for Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

For the second time in 21 starts under Doug Pederson, Lawrence and the offense failed to score a touchdown, dropping to 1-1 after a 17-9 loss at home to the Kansas City Chiefs.

On Monday, Lawrence shared a message on Twitter to express that, as bad as the loss was, the sky isn't yet falling in Jacksonville.

Lawrence finished the game 22-of-41 (53.7%) for 216 yards (5.3 yards per attempt), finishing with a passer rating 68.8 and being sacked four times.

Lawrence had two particularly rough plays vs. the Chiefs, taking a sack on a key fourth-down at the Chiefs' 45-yard line when he had an open Christian Kirk on one play, and then keeping a designed handoff on 1st-and-goal and losing yards in the fourth quarter.

“That’s what happens, there was quick pressure, we know Chris Jones is a great player. It just disrupted the timing of the route. I liked the decision, I liked where we were, we had a little momentum driving the football," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said on Monday.

"Then on the goal line, I think we’re just doing too much as a unit. We don’t need to necessarily take things into our own hands sometimes and just run the show, run the offense and from a coaching standpoint too, I’m saying we need to put our players in a little better situation. Don’t give them that type, maybe we don’t give Trevor [QB Trevor Lawrence] that type of option. We just say hey, you’re at the one-yard line, let’s run it four times in a row. Those are all things that it’s Week 2, we’re going to learn from it as a group and get better.”

The Jaguars will need Lawrence to be better in Week 3 -- it appears the quarterback already has his eyes on doing so.

"No, I think we -- you know, I'd have to go back and watch the game. Obviously, it's fresh and a lot just happened. And in the game situations is kind of what I'm thinking about most in my head and where we just, you know, didn't execute," Lawrence said after the game on Sunday.

"No, I think, as players, we got to execute better. We had too many mistakes. Some fluke plays, too. You know, like, trying to get the ball to Ag and it ends up being a fumble and they recover it at midfield. Stuff like that. We didn't get a fourth down early on. Obviously, in the red zone, like I said, I think we were 0-4. And when our defense is playing as good as they are and their offense is spurting like they did today, and obviously we were, too, we got to capitalize on those opportunities in the red zone.

"And we had some opportunities. We had a couple plays that were that close, whether it's in the back of the end zone where we make the catch and, you know, they push us out, or whatever it is. We just got to find a way to make those plays. You know, I missed a throw or two in the red zone where we had a chance. We got first and goal on the one-yard line and end up kicking a field goal when we're down eight. That was a big possession when you look back at the game. So we just had a lot of opportunities, you know, as disjointed as some of the things kind of were throughout the game. It was just a sloppy game I think all over the place. But we had our opportunities. We were in their red zone four times and came away with nine points. You know, that's -- you can't do that. You're not going to beat good teams when you do that. So we got to be better."
