Jaguars vs. 49ers: Could Jacksonville Catch San Francisco Without Trent Williams?

Will the best left tackle of his generation miss Sunday's contest vs. the Jaguars?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have seen plenty of players make their returns and debuts this season. There haven't been many cases where they caught the lucky break in terms of injuries.

In Week 10 vs. the San Francisco 49ers, though, the Jaguars' luck might finally shift.

All-World left tackle Trent Williams has established himself as one of the best offensive linemen of the century and as a key piece to the 49ers' operation, but he missed Weeks 7 and 8 with an ankle injury he sustained in Week 6. And on Wednesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't sound optimistic about Williams' progress following the bye.

"Yeah, I think obviously there is. I mean, just when you have -- he's got a lot of history in there with stuff. It didn't show up as a high or anything like that. But when you've had that over your career, there's a number of things that, with how it's taken longer than expected to heal, it's more than a low," Shanahan said about Williams' ankle injury, which kept him out of practice on Wednesday.

Shanahan said "I hope so," when asked if Williams would practice on Thursday.

Considering Williams is a 10-time Pro Bowler and has been a First-Team All-Pro in each of the last two seasons, his status is clearly one to watch. Backup left tackle Jaylon Moore has allowed just three pressures filling in for Williams, but the left side of the offensive line is where Jaguars outside linebacker Josh Allen lines up more often than not at over 85% of his snaps.

Allen leads the Jaguars with 9.0 sacks, nearly matching a career-high after just half a season. Allen is having a career year and a Defensive Player of the Year-level season, which could make Williams' status the key injury storyline of the week.
