Jaguars vs. Texans: Brandon Scherff, Foley Fatukasi Among 6 Questionable
The Jacksonville Jaguars aren't entering Week 17 at completely full strength, but they are pressing on and looking for a big divisional win all the same.
After losing two core pieces in Cam Robinson and Dawuane Smoot the last two games, the Jaguars will now enter Week 17 with six players listed as questionable.
The following players will be listed as questionable for Sunday's contest vs. the Houston Texans:
- QB Trevor Lawrence (toe)
- S Andrew Wingard (shoulder)
- OL Brandon Scherff (abdomen/ankle)
- DL Foley Fatukasi (ankle)
- OLB Travon Walker (ankle)
- LS Ross Matiscik (back)
While that is a long list of players who are listed with injuries as the season nears an end, it doesn't mean the Jaguars will actually be missing all six players.
Among those six are a few players who will clearly play, such as Wingard and Lawrence. Wingard has been listed as questionable each of the last two weeks and still played his primary special teams role despite his injury, while Lawrence has been questionable the last three games and still played in each game.
“It’s getting better. It’s one of those things. It’s sore after games and after moving around, but it’s something that you’ve got to monitor and take care of and be smart just to where I feel my best on Sunday and I can go play and not worry about it," Lawrence said this week about his injured toe, which he injured against the Detroit Lions in Week 13.
"It is feeling better though, I will say, compared to every week it’s felt a little better, so we’re headed in the right direction," Lawrence said.
"At this point in the year, a lot of people are dealing with things like that on every team. It’s just one of those things where you just play through it and it’s fine. You know we’ve been playing fine with it and been able to win some games, so I’m not worried about it, but it will probably be one of those things where it won’t feel 100% until probably after the season you get off of it for a couple weeks and all that.”
As for Walker and Fatukasi, each of whom has dealt with ankle injuries the last two weeks, there appeared to be some genuine optimism from head coach Doug Pederson.
“I do. He’s had a couple good days. We’ll ramp up his rep count again today and see where he’s at, but he’s on track and [we are] optimistic that he goes Sunday," Pederson said about Fatukasi.
Then there is Scherff, the team's big-money right guard and offensive captain. He missed a snap against the New York Jets in Week 16 after injuring his ankle in the first-half, but he returned soon after despite already dealing with an abdomen injury over the last few weeks.
"Brandon, he’s a unique individual. I think you guys saw it firsthand last week up in New York. He had that ankle sprain, and he’s been dealing with other issues, and he went back in that football game," Pederson said.
"Yeah, you want to be a little cautious with guys like that, but at the same time, if he wants to go, and he can go, and he can’t hurt himself anymore, then I’ve got to let him play. He’s in a good spot, but we’ll keep managing that day by day.”
