Jaguars vs. Texans: Week 3 Snap Count Analysis

Who played the most snaps vs. the Texans and why?

While watching a game live can give you one impression of a player's usage, looking at the actual amount of snaps they played compared to their teammates can also give insight into the team's strategy and outlook.

When looking at the snap counts for the Jacksonville Jaguars after their 37-17 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, it is clear to see what kind of plan the Jaguars went into the game with, and what limitations they had from a personnel standpoint.

Who played a lot, and why? Did the snaps mean anything or nothing? We examine below:

Offense (73 snaps)

  • LT Walker Little: 73 (100%)
  • LG Ben Bartch: 73 (100%)
  • C Luke Fortner: 73 (100%)
  • RG Brandon Scherff: 73 (100%)
  • QB Trevor Lawrence: 68 (93%)
  • WR Christian Kirk: 63 (86%)
  • WR Calvin Ridley: 60 (82%)
  • TE Evan Engram: 52 (71%)
  • RB Travis Etienne: 52 (71%)
  • RT Anton Harrison: 51 (70%)
  • WR Jamal Agnew: 40 (55%)
  • TE Luke Farrell: 25 (34%)
  • WR Tim Jones: 24 (33%)
  • RT Cole Van Lanen: 22 (30%)
  • TE Brenton Strange: 21 (29%)
  • RB D'Ernest Johnson: 12 (16%)
  • RB Tank Bigsby: 9 (12%)
  • WR Jacob Harris: 7 (10%)
  • QB C.J. Beathard: 5 (7%)
  1. Interestingly, it was Cole Van Lanen who stepped in at right tackle when Anton Harrison left the game with an ankle injury in the second half. Blake Hance had spent most of the training camp as the team's swing tackle, but it is Van Lanen who looks like the true next man up.
  2. Tank Bigsby scored a one-yard touchdown but he saw his snaps drop for the second week in a row. He has played just 22 snaps over the last two weeks, while Travis Etienne has played 100. It is Etienne's backfield, and Bigsby is there to give him a breathe and vulture goal-line scores.
  3. Jamal Agnew became the defacto No. 3 receiver with Zay Jones injured. Tim Jones took some of the outside snaps, but it is clear the Jaguars see Agnew as their No. 4 receiver.
  4. Brenton Strange saw his first two targets of the year, catching two passes for seven yards.

Defense (56 snaps)

  • FS Andre Cisco: 56 (100%)
  • LB Foyesade Oluokun: 56 (100%)
  • SS Rayshawn Jenkins: 55 (98%)
  • CB Tyson Campbell: 55 (98%)
  • CB Darious Williams: 48 (86%)
  • OLB Travon Walker: 47 (84%)
  • LB Devin Lloyd: 42 (75%)
  • DL Roy Robertson-Harris: 41 (73%)
  • OLB Josh Allen: 39 (70%)
  • DL Foley Fatukasi: 26 (46%)
  • DL Jeremiah Ledbetter: 25 (45%)
  • CB Tre Herndon: 23 (41%)
  • DL Angelo Blackson: 23 (41%)
  • DL Adam Gotsis: 22 (39%)
  • LB Chad Muma: 19 (34%)
  • OLB K'Lavon Chaisson: 16 (29%)
  • OLB Yasir Abdullah: 11 (20%)
  • DL Tyler Lacy: 7 (12%)
  • FS Andrew Wingard: 4 (7%)
  1. The Jaguars are having Travon Walker play nearly every snap, but they simply aren't getting much impact. He recorded two tackles for loss but had just one pressure.
  2. The Jaguars aren't getting much in the form of interior pressure, either. Roy Robertson-Harris is being leaned on as their primary rusher, but other options like Foley Fatukasi, Jeremiah Ledbetter, Angelo Blackson, and Adam Gotsis are playing a ton of snaps without much pass-rush provided.
  3. Chad Muma saw extended snaps on defense for the first time this season, replacing Devin Lloyd on three different possessions.
