Jaguars vs. Texans: Zay Jones (Knee) Held Out of Wednesday's Practice
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones didn't practice on Wednesday as he deals with a knee injury sustained in Sunday's 17-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Also not practicing for the Jaguars on Wednesday were safety Antonio Johnson (hamstring), and right guard Brandon Scherff (not injury-related).
Josh Allen (shoulder), Foley Fatukasi (shoulder) and Andrew Wingard (shoulder) were all limited.
Zay is going to be down today and we’ll monitor him day-to-day. Josh [Allen] is going to be fine, he’ll be out there a little bit limited, but he’ll be out there today in practice," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said on Wednesday.
Jones has five catches on 13 targets for 55 yards and a touchdown in two starts this season, though Week 2 was the first time in his Jaguars career that he didn't record a reception.
"The reason he is so reliable, number one is that the quarterback trusts him, he knows where he’s going to be. They spent going on two years together," Pederson said after Week 1.
"Zay is a tremendously hard worker, he’s smart, he’s an intellectual guy that just understands ball. He and Trevor have logged a lot of hours throwing and catching off to the side and working on different things. There’s that trust factor with him, and again, not saying he doesn’t have trust with other players, it’s just referring to Zay. It’s just a great double move, throw and catch for the touchdown. Really, the late in the game throw that Trevor made to him, just knowing exactly where he was going to be to make that throw. That’s who Zay is.”
If Jones can't play vs. the Houston Texans, he will be replaced by third-year receiver Tim Jones, Pederson said.
“That’s a big one, he’s a big part of what we’re doing. Tim Jones has had some playing experience for us and can fill that role quite nicely. Zay is a physical receiver who does some of the blocking for us as well, Tim has done that before and whatnot. Tim will get some work if Zay can’t go.”
