Jaguars WRs React to Ludicrous Trevor Lawrence Ranking
If most were to see Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence ranked as the No. 6 quarterback in the AFC entering 2023, they wouldn't think twice.
But what about Lawrence in the No. 6 tier of quarterbacks, which would place him between No. 10 and No. 13? That take hasn't been quite as warmly received.
That is the take NFL Network's Kyle Brandt has oddly rolled with, placing Lawrence in the sixth tier of AFC quarterbacks this week. The other quarterbacks in Lawrence's tier? Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett, New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tagovailoa.
Brandt's ranking has Lawrence behind other AFC quarterbacks whom he outperformed a year ago, including Denver's Russell Wilson, Cleveland's Deshaun Watson and Las Vegas' Jimmy Garoppolo.
"I love him like most of us do. I feel like last year was really his true rookie year because the year before they had Urban Meyer as head coach and it was a disaster. Wins a playoff game despite playing terribly in the first half, then makes the comeback. So it's complicated," Brandt said.
The ludicrous Lawrence take has been panned by analysts and fans alike, but they aren't the only ones. Also joining in at the disbelief at Lawrence's ranking were Jaguars wide receivers Christian Kirk and Jamal Agnew, who may know a thing or two more about Brandt when it comes to quarterback play.
In 17 starts in 2022, Lawrence completed 387 of 584 passes for 4,113 yards and 25 TDs. His 387 completions were the most in a single season in franchise history and his five rushing TDs were tied with Garrard for the most in single-season franchise history.
Lawrence joined Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Bills QB Josh Allen as the only players in the NFL with 25-plus passing TDs and at least five rushing TDs. Against the Titans in Week 14, Lawrence set a career-high with 368 yards passing and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
The second-year quarterback totaled four 300-yard passing games and orchestrated three comebacks of 17-plus points, including a comeback from behind 27-0 in the postseason against the Chargers.
"You guys have heard me say this before. It's going to be about us, the Jaguars. We don't worry about the other three teams in the division. We've just got to stay focused on our guys," Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson said after last week's draft.
"Trevor is in a good place right now. We've got to continue to grow him, keep him coming in the right direction. He took a big, big step forward this past year. The opportunity is right for him and our football team at this time. That's what we're focused on. We're focused on getting better for '23. We finished the season last year good, but not where we want to be. That's got to be our motivation as we prepare for this year."
