Report: Chiefs Plan to Switch Former Jaguars' RT Jawaan Taylor to LT
The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with former Jacksonville Jaguars right tackle Jawaan Taylor on Monday, landing the ascending tackle for a major four-year, $80 million deal with $60 million in guarantees.
But, just as the Chiefs know how, the deal might look even better than that.
According to NFL Network's James Palmer, Taylor will be making the switch to left tackle for the Chiefs. Taylor would be the fourth-highest paid left tackle per year at that figure, but that is a cheaper alternative than making him the NFL's highest-paid right tackle.
The Jaguars never considered Taylor a left tackle during his Jaguars tenure, largely due to the presence of left tackle Cam Robinson. But even in the times when Robinson was hurt, the Jaguars went with other options on the blindside in Will Richardson Jr. and Walker Little.
The Jaguars traded up in the second round to select Taylor with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Taylor appeared and started in all 68 games in his four years in Jacksonville, including 19 starts at right tackle in 2022.
“You never know what you’ve got until you get them on the field. Walk got a great chance to go out there and show his value as a player. It’s a balancing act. You’ve got good players," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said at the Combine.
"You’ve got a good young player in Jawaan (Taylor) who played at a high level. You’ve got a good young player in Walk that played at a high level when he got an opportunity, so we’re just going to, again, to assess the roster, talk to the coaches, which we have a lot of collaboration back and forth and just try to make the best decision for us, but bringing Jawaan back is something that we would like to do.”
