The Stat That Jaguars’ Cam Robinson Led All OTs in Last Season

The Jaguars' offensive tackle was one of the NFL's best in this category.

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson is fresh off a career year.

After being paid like a franchise left tackle last offseason, Robinson played the part for much of 2022. And according to Pro Football Focus, there is one area where he was better than any other offensive tackle in all of football: play-action protection.

Robinson was PFF's highest-rated pass-blocker on play-action plays last year, earning a 90.7 grade and beating out the likes of Trent Williams, Ikem Ekwonu, and others.

"Jacksonville’s Cam Robinson did not allow a single sack or quarterback hit while giving up just one hurry on 133 plays with play action. Similarly, rookie Braxton Jones did not allow a single sack or hit but did surrender four hurries on these plays," PFF said.

While it is true that play-action plays typically make things easier for the offensive line since they are designed to slow down the pass-rush, it is worth remembering that all offensive tackles have this advtange on such plays -- Robinson just did it better.

And it isn't as if there is a small sample size, either. The Jaguars weren't extremely play-action heavy in 2022, but according to Sports Info Solutions they did rank No. 17 in the NFL in play-action rate. This is a far cry from a limited sample size.

Robinson will likely take his spot back at starting left tackle in 2023 after serving his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substance policy, potentially in part because of how well he protects on play-action plays.

Robinson has appeared in 75 games during his six-year career after being drafted No. 34 overall in 2017. Last season, Robinson started in 14 games at left tackle, with 2021 second-round left tackle Walker Little (No. 45 overall) taking the other five starts.

Robinson missed the final five games of the season last year due to a meniscus injury. When asked before the draft if Robinson would be recovered by the start of training camp, Jaguars' general manager Trent Baalke said, "From a health standpoint, yes.”

Robinson officially signed a three-year contract extension with the Jaguars last offseason. The deal was first reported on the eve of the NFL Draft last year by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. According to Rapoport, Robinson signed a three-year deal worth a max total of $54 million with $33 million guaranteed.

In Robinson's place during the first month of the season will be Little, who took over at left tackle and started five games after Robinson's injury last year. The Jaguars also drafted Oklahoma offensive tackle Anton Harrison with the No. 27 overall pick in April, with the rookie set to start at right tackle.
