What Role Does Trevor Lawrence Play in Jaguars' Personnel Decisions?
With every franchise quarterback eventually comes the responsibility that impacts an entire organization: personnel input.
There are of course varying degrees to how much input quarterbacks have on their team's offseason and in-season decisions.
Some quarterbacks, like Aaron Rodgers, serve as pseudo-general managers and effectively have the organization cater to them. There are reports of Lamar Jackson having an input in the Ravens' offensive structure, while there was talk a few years ago about Patrick Mahomes' influence on the Kansas City Chiefs' decision to draft Clyde Edwards-Helaire
So, where does Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence fall on this scale? It is a bit different since he is a third-year quarterback as opposed to being a veteran, an MVP, or a Super Bowl winner, but there has never been much doubt that Lawrence's voice is heard.
Speaking ahead of last week's Super Bowl, Lawrence described exactly what role he plays, and why he doesn't dip his toes too deep in the personnel waters.
"Yeah I mean it is compartmentalized to a certain degree. I think that's healthy. I think everyone needs to know their lane and stay in it but it's a mix of both. There's definitely conversations that I have with, you know, Coach Pederson and Trent and whoever, Press on the offensive side, that is about personnel and you know, guys I really like that, you know, maybe that are up as free agents and want to come back or whatever it is, you know," Lawrence said on Up & Adams last week.
"Different things come up and they will ask me and I think they do value my opinion, which is important to me. But I also know that I can't be the best quarterback I can be if I'm also trying to be the GM or the head coach. I think it is healthy to have some separation there. But no, we communicate and I think we have a great relationship."
With several key free agent decisions on the horizon with Josh Allen and Calvin Ridley -- two players who Lawrence has publically pushed for the Jaguars to retain -- it will be interesting to see how much weight his voice carries.
It will also be interesting to see how Lawrence's voice develops as he continues to add seasons under his belt. It wouldn't be hard to envision him having Mahomes or Jackson-like input then, though Lawrence is clearly focused first and foremost on his own game.
