New York Jets Eyeing Offensive Tackle in NFL Draft?
It may not be highly-regarded receiver Rome Odunze, but the New York Jets could land a Washington Husky with the No. 10 overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Fast-rising offensive tackle Troy Fautanu seems to have moved onto the Jets' radar. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Huskies' bookend is scheduled to make a Top 30 pre-draft visit with New York on April 17.
Although the Jets acquired two battle-tested starting offensive tackles this offseason, Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses are both 33 years old and the need for an insurance policy is real. It shouldn't come as a surprise if New York chooses to use the No. 10 overall draft pick on a plug-and-play offensive lineman who can provide immediate depth.
The 23-year-old Fautanu's draft stock has been rising since the NFL Combine, where he impressed in the 40-yard dash. His 40 time (5.01) was faster than marks registered by top tackle prospects Joe Alt, Taliese Fuaga and Olu Fashanu. He has jumped up to the No. 3 slot amongst offensive tackles in the latest Pro Football Focus rankings, which place Fautanu at No. 13 on the overall big board.
Fautanu started all 15 games for the CFP finalists this past season, providing protection for the nation's second-leading passing offense. It was the two-time All-Pac 12 Conference First Team selection's second season as Washington's starting left tackle, spanning 28 appearances. He made one of his starts at left guard in 2022.
PFF Writes:
"Fautanu is a true athlete of an offensive lineman with starting-caliber traits for center or guard. His movement skills would be a big plus in a zone-blocking scheme."
