Rumor: Zach Wilson Headed From New York Jets To NFC Team?
Drew Lock is in New York with the Giants. Justin Fields is in Pittsburgh. Mitch Trubisky is in Buffalo. Carson Wentz is in Kansas City. Jimmy Garoppolo is in Los Angeles. Sam Darnold is in Minnesota.
Tyrod Taylor is in New York with the Jets.
Add it all up and, in the game of NFL backup quarterback musical chairs, Zach Wilson is in ... limbo.
With almost all the QB2 vacancies filled as NFL teams turn their attention toward the April 25 draft, Wilson remains without a team. After three disappointing seasons for Gang Green, owner Woody Johnson indirectly ripped Wilson during Super Bowl week by lamenting that the team "needs a backup quarterback ... we didn't have one last year."
After Aaron Rodgers suffered his season-ending injury after four snaps, Wilson took over but was ultimately benched and sent off to pasture. Johnson gave him permission to seek a trade at the beginning of free agency but - despite an active market at the position - Wilson found no suitors.
That's likely a product of Wilson's upcoming $11.1 million salary cap hit.
While Johnson said last week that he wouldn't release Wilson, some sort of divorce is inevitable.
With the quarterback market quickly disappearing as the NFL draft inches closer, the former No. 2 overall pick may need to remain with the Jets for another season, unless the franchise is willing to cover part of his salary and possibly even include draft compensation in a deal to unload him.
The future does seem to appear bleak for Wilson, but all hope is not lost. There may be a team waiting in the wings to acquire him if the perfect low-cost opportunity arises, according to CBS Sports.
Wilson's last, best option could be the New Orleans Saints. Behind starter Derek Carr, they have only journeyman Nathan Peterman and Jake Haener. Veteran backup Jameis Winston left New Orleans for the Cleveland Browns in free agency.
With the Saints, Wilson would have a chance to legitimately compete for — and possibly win — a backup role.
