WATCH: Three most enticing Jets trade packages to land Jadeveon Clowney
Even though the New York Jets drafted edge rusher Jachai Polite in the third round of the NFL Draft this year, they still have a dire need for pass rushers. Outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney would be a great addition for the team, and the Jets are one of the teams that are talking with the Houston Texans about acquiring the disgruntled player.
Here are the three best trade scenarios for the Jets to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler:
1. Ty Montgomery and a 2020 third-round pick
With Houston's starting running back Lamar Miller out for the season with a torn ACL, Houston is in need. The Jets signed Montgomery this offseason, but it wouldn't be the first time the Jets traded a player the same offseason they sign him.
Last year the team traded Teddy Bridgewater to the Saints right before the start of the season even though they signed him to a one year deal that season. In that deal, the Jets were able to get a third round pick. Maybe Montgomery's strong preseason and a third round pick can be enough for Clowney.
2. Steve McLendon and a 2020 second-round pick
It helps to have depth but Houston could use an interior defensive lineman. Quinnen WIlliams is ready to start at nose tackle for the Jets so it wouldn't be a huge loss for the Jets to give up McLendon. Add in a second rounder and the Texans could be enticed to make a deal.
3. Package of 2020 second-round pick, 2020 third-round pick and 2021 third-round pick
There's very few players the Jets have to offer for the Texans, so picks are likely the best course of action. A first round pick for Clowney is too much, so the next best thing is a second rounder. Add in two third rounders and you have a decent package for someone who clearly doesn't want to play for the Texans.
Regardless of what the Jets offer, if they do somehow acquire Clowney, they should make it their No. 1 priority to get him to sign an extension. Hopefully it would be a scenario similar to when the Chicago Bears traded for Khalil Mack last year right before the season started, who was extended shortly after.
It'll be difficult for the Jets to pull off a trade for Clowney. The team has so many other needs as well as pass rusher, so they need to retain all the talent they have.
Clowney also only has one year left on his contract so it wouldn't make sense for the Jets to give up so much for a one-year rental. A trade should only be accepted if the Jets can get Clowney to agree to an extension.
