Adam Gase Admits to 'Weird' Sunday return in Miami and a 'Fun Transition' with 1-6 Jets
Adam Gase returns to the Miami Dolphins this week in what will likely be a surreal moment for the now head coach of the New York Jets.
The return of Gase to Miami, where he was head coach for three seasons is likely to be bittersweet for Gase. The Jets are 1-6 in their first year under Gase, a small margin of improvement over the winless Dolphins. For Gase, who led the Dolphins to the playoffs in 2016 in his first year with the organization, there is very little difference between his current project and the status of his old charge.
Both New York and Miami are in rebuild mode in a division dominated by the New England Patriots, with the organizations both in search of an identity. To his credit, Gase embraced the idea that Sunday’s return to Miami will be a bit unusual for him.
“I think it will be weird for me on Sunday, just going in there. As far as anything else, I've got nothing there as far as hatred or anything,” Gase said.
In his three years in Miami, Gase compiled a 23-25 record with that single playoff appearance that culminated in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round. His next two seasons saw losing records with the Dolphins.
It has been a rocky start to his career with the Jets, whose current roster is the polar opposite of a veteran-laden team in Miami in 2016. Gase however, has moved beyond his firing in Miami – at least publicly.
“I've just moved past it. We didn't win enough games. I've enjoyed my time here. I've enjoyed the players that we have here,” Gase said.
“I've enjoyed how these guys have worked for us. This has been a fun transition for me. I know the results haven't been there, but I love the way our guys working.”
