Neville Hewitt could be ready to go this Sunday at Washington in what would be a big boost for the New York Jets defense were the linebacker ready to return and make an impact.

One of the few bright spots on the Jets this year, Hewitt has missed the past month due to a neck injury. He was limited in Friday’s practice but head coach Adam Gase sounded confident that Hewitt could be ready to return this weekend for the 2-7 Jets.

In five games this year – all starts – Hewitt had 37 tackles, two passes defended and two sacks. Despite missing nearly half the season, Hewitt is sixth on the team in tackles.

“He’s had a good two days so he felt good. We went pads on Wednesday,” Gase said on Friday.

So it was good. That was his big test. He got through that yesterday, kind of talked to him a little bit and was kind of like ‘I feel good.’ So we’ll just kind of see what the trainers say after today and see if we’re good to go.”

The return of Hewitt would be a big lift for a defense that has struggled in recent weeks to get off the field. There is some momentum for the Jets however, as the defense shut down the New York Giants in the fourth quarter last week in a 34-27 win.

He does like to play the NFC East it seems.

Hewitt had a monster game in Week 5, with 11 tackles in a 31-6 loss at the Philadelphia Eagles. Then the next week, he had six tackles in a win over the Dallas Cowboys.
