Jets' Denzel Mims Decision Highlights 2020 Draft Failures
The Jets have apparently given up on another member of the team's disappointing 2020 draft class.
Receiver Denzel Mims, who was the No. 59 overall selection three years ago, has reportedly played his last down with Gang Green.
As players reported for training camp on Wednesday morning, multiple media sources, led by New York Post writer Brian Costello, claimed that the Jets have Mims on the trading block and the organization is prepared to release the former second-round pick if interest does not materialize.
The 6-foot-3 Mims has struggled to earn snaps over his first three seasons as a professional. In 30 career games, he has managed only 42 receptions.
Mims has totaled 319 receiving yards during the Robert Saleh Era and has failed to pull in more than 60 percent of targets over the last two years.
"Hopefully, Mims takes another step forward," said Saleh at the NFL League Meetings in late March.
Now, the 25-year-old Mims, who requested a trade last summer, will have to look for that chance with a different team.
Mims is poised to become the second 2020 draftee released by the Jets this year. In April, the Green & White waived sixth-round punter Braden Mann.
The Jets made three fourth-round selections in 2020, but none of the three are still on the roster. Gang Green cut running back La'Mical Perine prior to the start of the 2022 regular season. Quarterback James Morgan was last seen in the USFL and offensive lineman Cameron Clark has since retired from football due to a spinal cord injury.
Of the two third-rounders from that somewhat-forgettable draft class, defensive end Jabari Zuniga is trying to make an impression with the New Orleans Saints while safety Ashtyn Davis is on the hot seat in Florham Park.
Meanwhile, 2020 first-rounder Mekhi Becton will battle for a starting offensive tackle spot after not having played since the 2021 season opener.
